IP66 19” Cabinets for Roadside Communications & Smart City Infrastructure

Sector: Transport / Smart City / Telecommunications
Application: Roadside ITS, CCTV, and communications nodes
Location: Metropolitan road network

Background
A state road authority was expanding its intelligent transport system (ITS), adding CCTV, traffic sensors, and variable message signs across a metropolitan network. Edge communications and networking equipment needed to be housed in compact roadside cabinets with reliable protection and easy access for maintenance.

Challenges

  • Outdoor location beside major roads required proven IP66 and IK10 protection against dust, water, vibration, and vandalism.
  • Network equipment (switches, routers, PoE injectors) needed 19″ mounting and structured cabling inside relatively small footprints.
  • Rapid deployment and consistent layouts across dozens of sites were critical to minimise installation time and reduce long-term maintenance complexity.

Solution

The authority deployed a standardised roadside cabinet solution based on:

  • IP Enclosures IP66 19″ Field Cabinets (wall-mounted and floor-standing) to house communications and networking equipment in harsh outdoor environments.
  • Modular accessory sets, 19″ DIN panels, cover panels, fan trays and cable management to keep layouts consistent and serviceable.
  • Integrated climate protection measures including filtered fans and, at hot sites, compact cooling units sized via IP Enclosures’ climate control guidance.

Products Used

  • IP66 19″ pole-mounted field cabinets in in various materials for compact roadside controllers.
  • IP66 19″ floor-mounted field cabinets in various materials for larger ITS hubs and communications shelters.
  • Data rack accessories, shelves, blanking plates, ventilated panels, and cable management hardware.

Results

  • Reliable protection of critical networking hardware in roadside locations, with significantly improved uptime of cameras and ITS devices.
  • Faster deployment of new sites due to repeatable enclosure and rack layouts, reducing engineering and installation hours.
  • Technicians report safer and more efficient maintenance thanks to logical internal layouts and robust door hardware and seals.
